Whatโ€™s New? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿš€ Big Changes Alert!

The Australian Government has tweaked the English Language Requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas. Hereโ€™s the scoop straight from their Migration Strategy unveiled on 11 December 2023, kicking in for applications from 23 March 2024 onwards.

Why Though? ๐Ÿคท

Itโ€™s all about boosting the quality of education and prepping international students for Australiaโ€™s skilled workforce. A win-win for future grads!

Temporary Graduate Visa (TGV) ๐ŸŽ‰

  • IELTS Score Hike: Now you need at least 6.5, up from 6.0.
  • Component Scores: Each part of the test (reading, writing, speaking, listening) needs at least 5.5.
  • Test Freshness: Your IELTS results must be no older than 1 year at application time.

Student Visa ๐Ÿ“š

  • IELTS Minimum: Jumping from 5.5 to 6.0
  • ELICOS Boost: Need at least a 5.0 for packaged ELICOS, up from 4.5.
  • Special Cases: ELICOS-only students, no change. Foundation/pathway program students need a 5.5.
  • VET & Higher Ed: Similar score bump for those in packaged ELICOS courses to ensure smooth course transition.

Dive Deeper: English Language Evidence ๐Ÿ“

When submitting your visa application, you may need to prove your English proficiency. Use the Document Checklist tool to determine the exact documents required.

Keep in Mind:

  • Post-Submission Requests: Even if initial checks suggest no evidence is needed, the Australian Government can request proof of your English language skills at any stage during the application process.
  • Required Proof: You must show that you either achieved a specific test score on an approved English language test or qualify for an exemption.

English Language Tests:

  • Test Validity: Your test results should be from within 2 years before either your visa application date or the decision date on your visa (if you didnโ€™t provide it with your application).
  • Test Providers and Scores: Detailed info on test providers, including ELICOS, and the necessary scores for the Student visa, are outlined in the provided tables.

Exemptions: Whoโ€™s Off the Hook? ๐Ÿ›‚

You might not need to show your English test score when applying for your visa if:

  • Passport Power: Youโ€™re from the UK*, USA, Canada, NZ, or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Special Category Students: Youโ€™re a Foreign Affairs or Defence sponsored student, or a Secondary Exchange student (AASES).
  • Specific Courses: Your main course is a registered school course, standalone ELICOS, taught in a non-English language, or a post-graduate research course.
  • English Background: Youโ€™ve studied in English for at least 5 years in Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Local Aussie Education: Within the last 2 years, youโ€™ve completed in Australia, in English, either a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education or a substantial part of a course leading to a qualification at Certificate IV or above on the Australian Qualifications Framework, while on a student visa.

Heads-Up: Holders of a British National Overseas (BNO) passport may still need to provide English test scores.
