Post-study work rights for international students to boost skills

Joint media release with the Hon Jason Clare MP

Australian Government increases post-study work rights for international students to address skills shortages and boost skilled labor. The changes include:

  • Extending post-study work rights for select Bachelor’s degrees from 2 to 4 years.
  • Extending post-study work rights for select Master’s degrees from 3 to 5 years.
  • Extending post-study work rights for select PhDs from 4 to 6 years.

Additional:

  • Establishing a working group to advise the Ministers for Home Affairs and Education on this and other relevant issues, which will report by 28 October 2022.
  • Investing $36.1 million in visa processing to support 500 surge staff over the next 9 months.
  • In response to stakeholder feedback, there will be a reassessment of work hours for international students in June next year. The specific number of hours will be determined following a detailed consultation process.

Ministers for Education and Home Affairs, Jason Clare and Clare O’Neil, respectively, have emphasized the significance of international education in Australia’s economy. Furthermore, they emphasized the need to support international students to contribute to the country’s productivity. Currently, only 16% of international students stay on after their studies end. Therefore, the changes aim to provide more opportunities for international students to use their skills in Australia.
